Overview

CanICampHere is a non-commercial project that helps outdoor enthusiasts understand camping regulations in Switzerland. We believe in transparency and collect as little data as possible.

You do not need to create an account, provide an email address, or share any personal information to use the map and all its features.

What We Collect

We collect only what is necessary to run and improve the service:

GPX Routes & Camp Spots

When you upload a GPX file or place camp spot markers on the map, this data is stored on our servers. Uploads are anonymous — we do not link them to any personal information. This data helps us understand usage patterns and improve the service.

Geolocation

If you use the "My Location" feature, your browser will ask for your permission first. Your location is used only locally on the map and is not sent to or stored on our servers.

Analytics & Error Monitoring

We use the following services to understand how the site is used and to identify and fix bugs:

Umami

Privacy-focused web analytics. Does not use cookies, does not collect personal data, and is GDPR-compliant. We only see aggregated statistics like page views and visit counts.

Vercel Analytics & Speed Insights

Collects anonymous performance metrics (page load times, web vitals) to help us keep the site fast and reliable. No personal data is collected.

Sentry

Error monitoring and crash reporting. When an error occurs, Sentry captures technical details (such as the error message and stack trace) to help us fix bugs. No personal data is collected.

Local Storage & Cookies

CanICampHere does not set tracking cookies. We use your browser's local storage for a small number of functional purposes:

Remembering that you accepted the map disclaimer
Remembering that you have seen the info tooltip
Caching map data locally (via IndexedDB) to improve loading performance

This data stays entirely on your device and is never sent to our servers.

Third-Party Services

The map and certain features rely on external services. When you use CanICampHere, your browser may make requests to the following providers:

Map Tiles (OpenStreetMap, Swisstopo): Provide the map imagery. Your browser requests tiles directly from these providers.

Swisstopo Elevation API: Used to display elevation data when you tap on the map.

OpenRouteService: Provides hiking route calculations. Requests are proxied through our server — your IP address is not shared with OpenRouteService.

Google Fonts: Fonts used on the site are loaded from Google's servers.

Your Rights

Since we do not collect personal data or require accounts, there is generally no personal data to access, modify, or delete. If you believe we hold data related to you, please contact us and we will assist you promptly.

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date. We encourage you to check back occasionally.
